In 2023, an estimated 10.8 million people fell ill with tuberculosis, and 1.25 million died from the disease. PIH wants to prove elimination is possible through a bold new approach we call Universal Access—and you can be part of it.

The World's Deadliest Infectious Disease

Tuberculosis (TB) is the world’s deadliest infectious disease. While many in wealthy countries think of it as a disease of the past, TB remains a painful reality for the 10 million people in poorer countries who fall ill annually. Poverty, overcrowding, and weak health systems fuel its spread, while inadequate care creates drug-resistant strains.

With decades of experience fighting for health equity, Partners In Health is driving a global movement to eliminate TB—leveraging new diagnostics, shorter treatments, and preventive therapies to prove that a TB-free future is possible. Introducing Universal Access

We’re trying a fresh approach to TB elimination—which we call “universal access search, treat, prevent,” or Universal Access, for short. 

Our three goals are clear: reduce suffering now with every tool available, build resilient health systems that treat and prevent TB, and generate data to inspire global adoption of Universal Access. 

Partners In Health is launching its Universal Access model in Lesotho, where TB and HIV rates remain among the highest in the world. Beginning in Mohale’s Hoek district, PIH will rapidly identify untreated patients, stop transmission, and prove that TB can be eliminated anywhere—bending the arc toward justice.

Author and advocate John Green is joining Partners In Health to rally a global community in the fight to eliminate tuberculosis. Together, we’re unveiling an ambitious goal of $100,000 this year to bring lifesaving care, treatment, and hope to millions affected by TB.

From Peru to Sierra Leone, I've seen up close the lifesaving work PIH is doing, strengthening healthcare systems in deep partnership with governments to make long-term, sustained change in the world we share. Whether it's helping people get access to TB treatment in Lima or saving a mother's life in Kono with an emergency C-section, PIH provides care to the people who need it most and are least likely to receive it, reminding us that injustice has a cure.
