No Woman Should Die Giving Birth
Every day, more than 700 women die from pregnancy or childbirth complications—that’s one woman every two minutes.
The odds of survival shouldn’t depend on where a woman lives. Yet, more than 90% of maternal deaths occur in low- and lower-middle-income countries, where health systems remain under-resourced. These losses are not inevitable; this is an injustice that reflects unequal access to the staff, supplies, and systems needed for safe, dignified childbirth.
With your support, Partners In Health is working to change this reality. Together with local ministries of health, we’re strengthening hospitals, training providers, and ensuring women everywhere can access safe, dignified, high-quality care—from prenatal visits to emergency surgery and family planning.

The Maternal Center of Excellence
For more than a decade, Partners In Health and Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Health have worked together to strengthen maternal care at Koidu Government Hospital (KGH) in Kono District. Now, that partnership is reaching a new milestone with the near completion of the Paul E. Farmer Maternal Center of Excellence (MCOE). Opening in early 2026, the MCOE will train clinicians, strengthen systems, and ensure that every mother and baby can access safe, dignified, high-quality care.
As the only facility in the region able to perform C-sections, KGH already serves as a critical lifeline for women with high-risk pregnancies. With new surgical suites, reliable electricity, and the country’s first neonatal intensive care unit, the MCOE will build on that foundation—training local clinicians, strengthening health systems, and ensuring that no woman dies from causes we can prevent. Join us in this bold step forward to radically reduce maternal mortality. Your investment today will help save lives and build a future where every mother and baby can thrive.
