With your sustained attention and support, we hope to enable essential services for mothers and children at the Maternal Center of Excellence, including blood bank and lab services, and essential drugs for antenatal, labor, delivery, neonatal intensive care, and post-operative services.
The new center, which broke ground in April 2021, will provide advanced maternal and child health services in Kono District and beyond. It will serve as a hub for global innovation in maternal health to be replicated in Sierra Leone and around the world.

Not just a facility—an entire health system.
We're not waiting until construction is finished. With Sierra Leone's Ministry of Health and Sanitation, PIH began improving the maternal care available at Koidu Government Hospital. The facility now has:
24-hour electricity to support C-sections
a blood bank to respond to post-partum hemorrhages
a fully stocked pharmacy in labor and delivery
trainings for clinicians to improve their skills and provide better care to patients
And, our shared efforts don't end there. We're also improving space, supplies, and services at the surrounding primary care facilities that refer mothers to Koidu Government Hospital.
