No Woman Should Die Giving Birth.

Sierra Leone has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. With your support, we can help ensure that every pregnant woman can look forward to childbirth as a moment to celebrate, not one to fear.

TOGETHER, WE CAN CURE THIS INJUSTICE.

Our Partners In Health Engage network aims to raise $123K via 4,000 fundraising connections this year to help make the Maternal Center of Excellence possible.

With your sustained attention and support, we hope to enable essential services for mothers and children at the Maternal Center of Excellence, including blood bank and lab services, and essential drugs for antenatal, labor, delivery, neonatal intensive care, and post-operative services.

The new center, which broke ground in April 2021, will provide advanced maternal and child health services in Kono District and beyond. It will serve as a hub for global innovation in maternal health to be replicated in Sierra Leone and around the world.

This video contains recent updates from the MCOE construction site.

Not just a facility—an entire health system.

We're not waiting until construction is finished. With Sierra Leone's Ministry of Health and Sanitation, PIH began improving the maternal care available at Koidu Government Hospital. The facility now has:

  • 24-hour electricity to support C-sections
  • a blood bank to respond to post-partum hemorrhages
  • a fully stocked pharmacy in labor and delivery
  • trainings for clinicians to improve their skills and provide better care to patients

And, our shared efforts don't end there. We're also improving space, supplies, and services at the surrounding primary care facilities that refer mothers to Koidu Government Hospital.

We demand justice in health care.

half-world-stat
50% of people across the globe lack access to essential health care.
fifth-birthday-stat
15,000 children die before reaching the age of 5 — every day.
maternal-deaths-stat
99% of maternal deaths occur in low and lower middle-income countries.

Everyone should have access to quality health care, but for millions around the world, that’s not the reality. That’s morally wrong, and it’s why our teams around the world are currently working to improve power reliability at 15 facilities across 6 countries. Donate now and help us end this injustice.
