Fund reliable, lifesaving health care
Hôpital Universitaire de Mirebalais (HUM), our flagship teaching hospital in Haiti, is now the largest solar-powered hospital in the Caribbean, thanks to a recently completed upgrade to its solar power system. This transformation ensures stable, reliable energy for uninterrupted health care.
With this solar upgrade, completed in incredibly challenging circumstances, HUM has become more resilient, reducing reliance on risky fuel deliveries and saving over $700,000 annually—funds that can now be redirected to lifesaving health care. Yet, years of unrest and violence have created an unprecedented surge in both the need for emergency care and the cost of delivering it.
While donations have grown, they have not kept pace with this urgent need. We need your help. All donations continue to provide urgently needed care—building on a more efficient, resilient foundation that saves lives and brings hope for a healthier, brighter future in Haiti.
No patient should have to brave roadblocks and the threat of kidnapping to travel to a hospital for care. No nurse should have to do the same. The fact that our resilient team has managed to keep essential health facilities open, and improve them, during these years of continuous instability and violence is a testament to their dedication and courage.
Powering Health Care Systems
Discover how Zanmi Lasante and Build Health International are transforming healthcare in Haiti with an innovative solar power system at Hôpital Universitaire de Mirebalais. This clean energy solution reduces reliance on fossil fuels, ensuring life-saving care for patients in even the most challenging conditions.
We anticipate an influx of new patients and are already seeing a steady rise in patient volume across our facilities. This surge in patient numbers has led to increased demands across various areas, including:
- Costs have risen across all areas, from food and medical supplies to port and customs charges for alternative transportation methods into Haiti. These increased expenses have placed additional strain on our operations;
-
Logistics costs have also spiked as we resort to more frequent, smaller trips to move supplies due to the scarcity of trucks. These adjustments are necessary to ensure critical supplies reach our facilities;
- Our teams face increased expenses to support our more than 6,000 staff, many of whom endure extended stays at our facilities, away from their families, to continue providing lifesaving care.
