Eid Celebration of the International Day of the Girl (Awareness Raising Event)

PIH | Engage Main Line Community is having an event Monday, October 14th at 6:30pm in Bryn Mawr. International squash player and social justice advocate, Maria Toorpakai, will be there to speak.

Maria was born in South Waziristan, a tribal region bordering Afghanistan in Pakistan's northwest. She is currently ranked as Pakistan's top female player, and 49th in the world. As a child in a highly conservative tribal area of Pakistan, Maria trained and competed as a boy, as suggested by her father, as girls' involvement in sport was forbidden by the local culture. Come out to learn more about her incredible story!

Maria is Pakistans #1 female squash player from the Northern tribal area now resides in Toronto- she was sponsored by Canadian Jonathan Powers (world ranked #1) two years ago amidst Taliban threats.
She is competing in the US Open Squash tournament Oct 10-18 2013 at Drexel University.
