Dear Friends of Partners In Health,

Spring is almost here, and I look forward to joining many of you at Oprah’s “Live Your Best Life Walk” in New York City on Mother’s Day, May 9th.

Mother’s Day is not only an important occasion to recognize the strength and love of mothers across the globe, but also a time to reflect on our children, neighbors, and friends in need.  As the Medical Director of Partners In Health, I look to Haiti in her time of need. Even though the January 12 earthquake is fading from the news, the situation for the Haitian people remains grim.

Hundreds of thousands have lost their homes and are now living in makeshift shelters. They lack even basic necessities--food, water, sanitation. Schools, hospitals, and government buildings lie in ruins. The rainy season has already begun, drenching homeless survivors and exacerbating the spread of infectious diseases.

I witnessed apocalyptic destruction upon arriving in Haiti the day after the earthquake to join the Partners In Health team already providing medical care on the ground. But I also witnessed the unbreakable strength of the Haitian people:  mothers caring for children who had lost limbs; youth assisting parents to meet basic needs; fathers, sisters, colleagues, and neighbors, persevering in the face of immense loss.  It is for these Haitian men and women that I will walk on May 9th.  I hope you will join me in showing our commitment to standing with the Haitian people and sending a message of hope.

By supporting Partners In Health for Live Your Best Life, you will contribute to the recovery of Haiti with the decency and spirit that all mothers know well.  I look forward to joining you on May 9th as we walk, sing, and come together to show our support, in solidarity and great hope, for the mothers of Haiti and all her people as they rebuild anew.

With Gratitude,

Joia Mukherjee

STAND WITH HAITI
When the earthquake hit Haiti on January 12th, Partners In Health was uniquely placed to respond. With a network of 12 hospitals and over 4,000 employees, our team was able to immediately mobilize to help those most in need. We’ve treated thousands of injured patients, set up clinics in makeshift settlements that are home to nearly 100,000 people, and started working with local partners to rebuild Haiti’s health and medical systems.

But this is only the beginning. Haiti’s problems cannot be solved overnight. In the months and years ahead, Partners In Health will continue to serve the people of Haiti with expanded health services and strengthened social support, community development, and poverty alleviation programs.
